.cat domains were launched on September 15, 2005, although it was the end of a process that lasted approximately two years, since the opening of domain names for communities by ICANN. As a curious fact, the first registered .cat domain was tan.cat a domain hack that we could translate to "closed", a little joke of the engineers that took part in the technical process of the opening of the extension.
Although the initial application for the launch of .cat was presented by the Associació puntCAT, this association was dissolved and gave birth at the end of 2004 to the current Fundació puntCAT, since then this entity works with the objective of managing the registration of .cat domains and promoting the Catalan-speaking Information Society.
